FAUNAL REVIEW OF THE UPPER TRIASSIC CHINLE FORMATION OF ARIZONA WILLIAM G. PARKER Division of Resource Management, Petrified Forest National Park

چکیده

The Chinle Formation of Arizona is a highly fossiliferous terrestrial unit from the Late Triassic Period. Fossil vertebrate collections from the Chinle Formation date back to the late 1890s and document a diverse fauna that is correlative with other Late Triassic faunas worldwide. No fewer than 18 holotype specimens including metoposaurids, phytosaurs, aetosaurs, crocodylomorphs, dinosauromorphs, and other archosaurs have been described from Chinle exposures in Arizona. A faunal overview of the most important localities and a review of the vertebrates is provided.

Osteology of the Late Triassic aetosaur Scutarx deltatylus (Archosauria: Pseudosuchia)

Aetosaurians are some of the most common fossils collected from the Upper Triassic Chinle Formation of Arizona, especially at the Petrified Forest National Park (PEFO). Aetosaurians collected from lower levels of the park include Desmatosuchus spurensis, Paratypothorax, Adamanasuchus eisenhardtae, Calyptosuchus wellesi, and Scutarx deltatylus. Four partial skeletons collected from the park betw...

Revised Lithostratigraphy of the Sonsela Member (Chinle Formation, Upper Triassic) in the Southern Part of Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona

BACKGROUND Recent revisions to the Sonsela Member of the Chinle Formation in Petrified Forest National Park have presented a three-part lithostratigraphic model based on unconventional correlations of sandstone beds. As a vertebrate faunal transition is recorded within this stratigraphic interval, these correlations, and the purported existence of a depositional hiatus (the Tr-4 unconformity) a...

The Late Triassic pseudosuchian Revueltosaurus callenderi and its implications for the diversity of early ornithischian dinosaurs.

A new discovery of skeletons of Revueltosaurus callenderi from the Upper Triassic Chinle Formation of Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona clearly shows that Revueltosaurus is not an ornithischian dinosaur as previously supposed. Features such as the presence of a postfrontal, crocodile-normal ankle and paramedian osteoderms with anterior bars place R. callenderi within the Pseudosuchia, clo...

Microanatomy and paleohistology of the intercentra of North American metoposaurids from the Upper Triassic of Petrified Forest National Park (Arizona, USA) with implications for the taxonomy and ontogeny of the group

Metoposaurids are temnospondyl amphibians that are commonly recovered from the Chinle Formation deposits of North America. Two species, Koskinonodon perfectus and Apachesaurus gregorii, are known from Petrified Forest National Park (PEFO), AZ. Small, elongate intercentra are the single diagnostic postcranial characteristic of the smaller A. gregorii. However, a poor understanding of the earlies...

An Aetosaur (reptilia:archosauria) from the Upper Triassic Chinle Group, Canyonlands National Park, Utah

A partial skeleton of the aetosaur Stagonolepis sp. is the first tetrapod body fossil recovered from Upper Triassic strata in Canyonlands National Park. The specimen consists of a partial tooth and numerous disarticulated vertebrae, ribs, and scutes found in the Blue Mesa Member of the Petrified Forest Formation (Chinle Group) near Upheaval Dome. Stagonolepis is an index taxon of the Adamanian ...
